I did two seasons with HFIG during my degree and I firmly believe it was the most valuable experience I had up to date. Their intern programme is an invaluable way to gain hands on experience with scientific data collection, species ID and knowledge about the fishing industry. Getting sea time on a boat that uses industry techniques is incredibly rare, add that to the scientific base to their work and HFIG provide an excellent steppingstone for any aspiring fisheries scientist. Jamie, Mike and John all bring different, real world experience to the programme. I wish I had been around for the hatchery and lab as this adds another dynamic to the work they do. My time with HFIG gave me the drive to pursue a career in fisheries, and I am very proud of where I am. The work is hard but rewarding and the more you put in the more you will get out.
